Keep your pet safe on the 4th of July

Posted

As the 4th of July approaches, it is important to remember that while fireworks are a thrilling way to celebrate Independence Day, Joint Animal Services (JAS) reminds us that they can be distressing for pets.

To keep your furry friends safe and comfortable, it is important to plan ahead.

Many dogs and cats are frightened by the noise of fireworks, which can cause some to panic and run away.

To prevent this, ensure your pets are inside during the festivities with the following tips:

  • Turning on the air-conditioning, radio, or TV can help mask the loud noises.
  • Walking your dogs several times during the day or exercising them indoors can help them stay relaxed and tired when the fireworks start.
  • Providing a bone or a toy filled with kibble and treats can also help lower their stress.
  • Cats can be distracted with string or catnip toys and some treats to keep them calm.
  • Avoid setting off fireworks near wildlife areas as the loud noises and bright lights can disturb wildlife, causing animals to flee and potentially abandon their young.

JAS also mentioned that stray sparks from fireworks can also pose a fire hazard.
