Intercity Transit’s board of directors to begin recruiting for new community representatives in September

General Manager Emily Bergkamp told the Intercity Transit board last Wednesday, June 18, that Intercity the company will hire a new community representative for its board of directors starting in September.

The new board member will replace Don Melnick, whose term ends on December 31. Due to term limits, Melnick is no longer eligible for reappointment.

Community representatives are voting members of the board, which sets Intercity Transit's policies, budget, and service levels.

According to a timeline that Bergkamp told the board, IT plans to advertise for the position starting September 2, with applications due by October 23. Those interested in applying will get more information from the agency’s website and social media accounts as the agency begins advertising.

The board will select candidates to interview in November before determining which one to appoint by late November or early December.

The board members appoint all three community representatives. The board may appoint one community representative for up to three consecutive three-year terms.

Board member Justin Belk, one of the board's three community representatives, advised IT’s leadership to ensure that they reach out to candidates they may not have reached in the past.

“The board, the CAC (Community Advisory Committee), as we've discussed before, need to reflect the community as best as it can,” Belk said. “So just speaking for the sake of diversity on all levels, that we be sure that especially the initial outreach for the opportunity is robust.”

Board member Sue Pierce, another community representative, advised advertising beyond social media as not everyone is in it. Board member Carolina Meija of Thurston County also suggested contacting local organizations to see who might be interested in applying.
