Teacher of the Year: Andrew Landowski of Black Hills High School

Capital Region Educational Service District (ESD) 113 hailed Andrew Landowski, as its 2025 Regional Teacher of the Year.

Landowski is the band director and music coordinator at Black Hills High School in the Tumwater School District. 

Capital Region ESD 113’s press release stated that Landowski had built a comprehensive band program at the high school, exceeding many larger schools.

Nearly 20% of Landowski's students were selected for All-State ensembles this year and competed in state solo and ensemble events annually.

The press release stated that the selection committee chose Landowski because his dedication to students and the arts stands out in his district and the surrounding community.

“Mr. Landowski is not only an outstanding educator but also a compassionate mentor, a collaborative team player, and an inspirational leader,” said Black Hills High School Principal Dave Meyers in the press release.

“His unwavering commitment to student success and his tireless efforts to create a positive and inclusive learning environment make him an exceptional candidate for the Washington Teacher of the Year award,” added Meyers.

As a regional finalist, Landowski will participate in interviews, a short keynote presentation, and a mock press interview before a weekend leadership retreat.

Landowski is one of nine candidates nominated by their respective ESDs to be considered for Washington State Teacher of the Year.  The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction is set to select the national winner this fall.

As to why the award reflects the year 2025, Capital Region ESD 113 Executive Director for Strategy & Engagement Kristen Jaudon explained in an email that the award leads to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI)’s National Teacher of the Year program, and the district is just following the naming protocol.
