William A. Bush, former City of Lacey (City) Mayor and City Councilmember, passed away Thursday, December 21.
Bush provided nearly 24 years of service and dedication to the Lacey community serving on the Lacey City Council from 1973 to 1997, including one term as mayor.
“William’s commitment to our community and lifelong passion for parks and recreation helped shape Lacey into the thriving city we enjoy today,” stated Mayor Andy Ryder. “His legacy will live on for generations to come as people enjoy his namesake park and other parks across the City.”
Bush officially assumed public office at the City on July 26, 1973. He was the first mayor to serve their entire term under the council-manager form of government, which was new to the City at the time.
During his time in office, Bush’s top priorities included improving transportation infrastructure and supporting construction of a performing arts center on the Saint Martin University campus. He also led the effort to create the Intergovernmental Human Resources Committee, a body comprised of governmental and community representatives from Lacey, Olympia, and Tumwater which distributed a portion of funds to local service groups working for the betterment of the communities. Additionally, Bush formed the Blue Ribbon Postal Tax Force Committee to help improve service at the Lacey Post Office.
In 2005, the City recognized Bush for his lifelong advocacy for parks and recreation by naming the park along Yelm Highway William A. Bush Park.
