Learn about bicycles and safe biking! Avanti Bikes!, a new bicycle education program at Avanti High School in Olympia, will be holding a free open house on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, from 5-7 p.m. Students will demonstrate skills including ABC quick checks, bike-fit checks, safety, and repair and maintenance skills.
Mission: Avanti Bikes! empowers students through an interdisciplinary bicycle education program, fostering lifelong physical activity, environmental awareness, and community engagement. They aim to instill safe biking habits, provide hands-on bike shop experiences, and promote mobility justice, all in line with Avanti’s commitment to equity, collaboration, and student-centered learning.
Program Overview: In collaboration with Intercity Transit’s @walknrollit program, Avanti Bikes! is revolutionizing physical education. This initiative allows students to earn a bike while mastering essential pedestrian and bicycle safety skills, breaking away from traditional PE norms. The program includes hands-on maintenance training, on-road experiences, and advanced certifications.
Looking Ahead: Avanti Bikes! is set to launch a bike shop serving other @olympiaschooldistrict schools and the South Sound community. This shop will be a hub for bike festivals, repairs, and community engagement, with internship opportunities through Walk-N-Roll.
